How do I use OneNote 2003 with a Wacom Graphire3 stylus & tablet?

I have OneNote 2003 runing on a Dell Latitude D610 laptop pc. I would like
to use my Wacom Grpahire3 CTE430SA stylus and USB2.0 tablet to input
hand-written notes. Everything in OneNote Help seems to respond solely based
upon running Windows XP for Tablet PC rather than Windows XP Professional
(NON-tablet) despite indicating it can be used with a stylus (or mouse) for
input (as well as the omnipresent Tablet PC).

Any idea how to do this

External devices primarily create a graphic or drawing in OneNote, while on
a Tablet PC the built-in pen/recognizer system creates Ink. So you're
creating a single drawing instead of the individual strokes in the digital
handwriting. Tablet PCs run Windows XP Pro as the operating system, BTW.

Thanks for the info. I thought Windows XP for Tablet PC was a separate
version. Is it possible to load in either some add-ons to my XP Pro
(non-tablet now) or an "upgrade" to XP for Tablet PC on top of my XP Pro on
my NON-TABLET laptop to pick up these Ink pen/recognizer capabilities when I
use this external Wacom Graphire3 stylus/tablet (USB 2.0 port) with OneNote
2003 (and Word 2003)? Or, alternatively, is there another stylus/tablet that
would be more readily suited to OneNote on this laptop?

No "upgrade" is available. The Tablet PC bits ship pre-installed on Tablet
PCs or are available via an MSDN subscription for developer use only. A lot
of the functionality of a Tablet PC is limited to Tablet PCs, although it
can be emulated with digitized screens, etc.

I run OneNote 2003 with my Wacom Graphire 3 (4x5) on Windows 2000. It
works well. The writing is saved as graphics not handwriting INK. But
I dont care. I can't afford to have Microsoft's Black Box Handwriting
recognition be the centre of my information retrieval anyway.

Not to mention OneNote's search features are anemic.

The search is really wonderful with real digital Ink. But then I'm using
OneNote with the full intended Tablet PC functionalities for handwriting.

I have an Toshiba M200 TPC. The search is not wonderful. Nor is the
handwriting recognition.

Thanks for the feedback, EMRhelp! Maybe you can offer some insights on your
usage for this OneNote newbie.

If I undetstand you correctly, you're using the Wacom Graphire3 (4x5) [same
as mine] as a direct plug-in for OneNote input as graphics-only note-taking.
When I do this, OneNote opens some "palette" areas for the graphics but I
keep getting disjointed "palettes" if I space the characters just a bit too
far apart. When I'm done, if I resume typed text, OneNote tries to highlight
the last "palette" by outline image of my graphic handwriting. I haven't
figured out how to merge disconnected "palettes" that make up one word (to
relocate as a complete group). It probably doesn't help that I print rather
than use longhand. Is this what you run into or do you have some work-around
with your Wacom Graphie3 stylus/tablet?

heh.
Never noticed that.
it seems kinda like a bug.

It doesnt bother me though.
Just click the cursor to a blank spot on OneNote and start typing.
Visually my eye knows not to type until I see the "TYPING BOX" which is
slightly shaded.

FYI berock,

Try the Wacom Tablet on Word 2003 with a feature called Write Anywhere.
It's really awesome. You can capture your handwriting to Word 2003.
The best part is that you can write HUGE and then Word Scales it down
to "the font size" you are using. cool eh ?
You can also get Write Anywhere to convert your writing into text in
real time.

To hell with a TPC ! :)

I noticed the Write Anywhere icon in my Task Bar. I tried it in OneNote but
didn't see any real difference. I'll try it in Word to see if it does what I
wish OneNote could do. Thanks!

I didn't think Write Anywhere worked in OneNote.
So I tested it.
For some reason, the Write Anywhere to Handwriting in OneNote is greyed
out. You can use Write Anywhere to Text in OneNote.

Why would that be greyed out ? Since all that needs to be done is to
insert graphics into OneNote.

Do you have to have a specific program to use the "pen" feature by writing on
the screen? I don't understand that concept at all. I haven't recieved my
laptop yet, but I am getting a Dell Inspiron 6000. Can I use a tablet pen or
whatever it is to write on the screen?

I bought a Graphire4 6x8 tablet. It is the bomb. It also comes with
EverNote *FREE* and that is a cool little APP.

I am also new to handwriting. Mine WAS working with OneNote only installed
and using a WACOM digital pad and pen input. Then I installed Office Basic
in the hope of getting the handwriting insertion bar to use and to convert to
type in both OneNote and Word 03. Now I have no handwriting recognition at
all. When I follow the instructions for setting in up through control panel
.... add/change features... advanced settings ... handwriting is not included
as an option - only speech. Maybe it doesn't come with Office Basic, but
why did I lose an ability I had previously in OneNote.
