how do you buy the right new version of an office product

L

Lodgy

Sir,
my laptop came with Office XP installed. But no Powerpoint or indeed Access.
Individual components of Office seem to be the 2002 versions i.e. Excel
2002, Word 2002.
Now I would like to buy a version of Powerpoint that will integrate with the
rest of my Office products.
I do not want to buy the latest version of Powerpoint because later on I
will doubtless upgrade to a whole new version of Office, thereby possibly
buying the same version of Powerpoint twice.
On the other hand, I do not want the expense of a brand new copy of Office
just yet.
What are my options?
Many thanks.

Well, I'm a ma'am, not a sir, but since I'm a PPT MVP, I'll respond anyway.
:)

It sounds as if you have Office XP SBE (Small Business Edition). It does not
come with PPT or Access.

Office XP SBE is actually a qualifying product for the PPT 2003 Upgrade
(http://www.microsoft.com/office/powerpoint/howtobuy/default.mspx), so you
can purchase the PPT 2003 Upgrade for $109 USD and add PPT 2003 to your
products. It should integrate fine with your existing 2002 products.

Note: You cannot use the PPT 2002 Upgrade to add PPT to Office XP SBE. You
would have to purchase the full standalone PPT 2002 version, not the
upgrade.

Madam,
if you're a PPT MVP then your sex is indeed completely irrelevant :)
Being a Brit (did you guess?) I can't use your link because the vendors will
only sell to the US.
But I'll have a look at amazon.co.uk and see if I can find the upgrade.
Won't be $109 though, probably £109! Which is why I want to make sure and get
the right product.
Sounds like a good solution though - I'll let you know how I get on.
Many thanks,
Colin Lodge

You're welcome, Colin. I mostly wanted you to see the list of qualifying
products at that link so you could confirm for yourself.

Before PPT 2003/Office 2003 was released, adding PPT to Office XP SBE was a
real sore spot with many of us -- as I mentioned before, you can't use the
PPT *2002* Upgrade to add PPT to Office XP SBE. And in fact, you couldn't
use a PPT Upgrade to add PPT to any version of Office SBE, because those SBE
versions didn't have PPT in the first place.

Fortunately, Microsoft changed this when Office 2003 was released. Not only
is PPT actually included in the SBE edition, but you can use the PPT 2003
Upgrade to add PPT to various previous versions of Office SBE.

I realize that's way more than you wanted to know, but someone else reading
the thread may benefit from it. :)

And if you are NOT a PPT MVP is it then relevant ))))

Madam,
just installed PowerPoint as an upgrade to Office XP 2003 and it worked a
treat.
Thank you kindly.
