How do you OVERLINE letters / words?

How can I OVERLINE letters or words in Word and Excel?

I have a document in PDF with things like "ABC_2 = RST", and the "ABC_2" has
a line ABOVE it. Someone else has done it, so I know it can be done somehow.

I tried underline and Superscript. That did not work. I tried to insert
"Special Character" overline, but that replaced the letters with the overline.

Can anyone tell me how to Overline?

A more versatile method is to use equation editor since JoAnn's only allows
for certain characters. In Word 2007 go to the insert tab. It should open
the design tab. Click on the Accents button and there should be an Overline
as well as some other letter accents you may need. Hope this helps.
