How do you tell if Office 2004 is a Trial Version?

I visited a elderly lady yesterday with new 24-inch iMac that she
purchased from the Apple store about three months ago. Needless
to say she had all kind of questions.

I was going to help her with the Office 2008 update until I found
she had Word 11.1 which I think is Office 2004. She really does
not need to spend the money for 2008 as all she uses is Word
to do is personal letters and Entourage for light email.

I could not tell if she had a real version of Office 2004 or the trail
version that came on the iMac. How do you tell the difference?

If she only has the trial version, I will recommend that she purchase
2008 but if she has a valid version of 2004 that's probably good enough.

She shouldn't spend a dime on office 2008 until they make it a real business
suite. As it stands it's a joke.

In any program you can see the version. Apple ~, or program, about ...

Most likely it's the demo. She should remember if she had installed the full
copy.

TextEdit might suffice for what she needs. TextWranger is a free text editor
she might like a bit better.

When you send email with the test drive it adds something like 'sent by test
drive'.

If she does need to upgrade get the Home & Student version.

Remove the test drive before installing!

Hi Arkay -

Has she been using the Office software? If it *is* the Test Drive it's only
a 30-Day trial, so by now you shouldn't be able to run it. You can also try
using Help> Check for Updates... The TD can't be updated.

If she does need to replace the TD & her needs are that simple it might be
worth considering the use of Apple's Mail app for email & getting iWork - a
far cheaper solution that more than meets the need as you've described it.

Thanks for the good information. I have some email from her and says
nothing about a trial version. She may have purchase Office 2004
and someone installed it for her.

I just checked an email message from her and it says

User-Agent: Microsoft-Entourage/11.4.0.080122

That is probably from Office 2003.

I'll probably recommend she stay with what she has but the Amazon
price in he link you provided is pretty attractive.

Thanks for the help

If her version is at 11.4.0 it isn't the TD - which [I'm pretty sure] could
not have updates applied and would have expired long before now anyway.
Especially if she can save & print at this point it must be the live 2004.
