How to change background, slide master does not work

I have to change the background in a ppt file and all the obvious solutions
don't work (slide master, change background, etc). It seems the slides and
their current background are pasted on top of each existing slide. For
example, I can shrink the existing slide and the newly selected background is
there but I can't alter of the original slides and need the information from
all the slides, about 80. Do I have to cut and paste each one to a new
presentation or is there a way to change the background or send the info to a
blank background file?

I think this really depends on how the information is there. Is it just
text on top of pictures, or is it a picture that includes the text? Can you
edit any of the text? If so, you can probably either extract the text or
get rid of the pictures that are blocking your background. If you can't,
then the text is probably part of a picture, and you will have a hard time
extracting it.
