How to change Printer Settings, not default?

Phideaux

Hi,

I am new to Word and am using Word 2002 (sp3).

No matter what I do, it will not store/load Printer Properties with a document that are different from the default settings.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

TIA,
Neil

Suzanne,

Let me make really certain that we understand each other.

Example: I want to print individual 3x5 index cards on both sides.
The system default for the printer is 8½ x 11 printed on one side.
I can set the document Printer Properties to do this, but they do not return when I re-open the saved doc. Even Works can do this.

Is this really impossibly with Word 2002?

Thanks,
Neil

I misunderstood what you were asking, I guess. You can choose the paper size
and the paper source; those are saved with the document. But the *printer*
is not. Publisher, for example, can remember that I want to print color
posters on my DeskJet printer and monochrome certificates on my LaserJet.
Word can't. Moreover, duplexing is a printer Properties setting that is out
of the range of what Word can save (though I suspect Publisher can save this
with the file).

I guess I am still unsure about the paper size. It "lives" in the Page Setup, which my Word saves. It also "lives" in the Print dialog under Properties, where 2-sided also lives. This latter one is always whatever my default for the printer is. So evidently Word does not save anything from the properties dialog box? I have submitted a help request with MS (late last week) but have not heard from them. If none of this dialog is saved that would explain not saving which printer.

Of course I am sure for most folks the Page Setup size is not necessarily the same as Paper size. Therein lies the rub.

The paper size set in the printer Properties should be inherited by
Normal.dot as the default paper size for new Blank Documents. But the paper
size set in a specific document should override that. You should set up the
paper size in the printer driver for whatever paper size you use most often
(probably Letter or A4) and leave it alone, then set different paper sizes
for specific documents as needed.
