How to Delete Headers No Longer on Server

I have several clients using a common account and one Outlook 2003 client which downloaded headers only. Other clients then downloaded and deleted the messages but now in the first client aI have all these headers which won't delete or go away. The send/receive action complains correctly that the messages are no longer on the server but I can't remove them from my In Box. Any ideas please?
