How to delete message without opening

Trying to delete a mail message without it automatically opening, even
just right clicking to delete still opens it. Is there a setting
somewhere that I am missing?

First turn off the preview pane. Use Shift-Del to permanently delete
it; otherwise, just using the Delete context menu or the Del key will
move it into the Deleted Items folder.

How do you turn off the preview pane? I do not use Windows, it is my
wife's computer.
