How to delete styles in word?

I'm using Word 2003 and trying to delete some styles for Headings which we do
not use. They are Heading styles 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 and I do not have the
option to delete them? I click on Format on the Menu bar and then select
Styles. Then once I highlight these styles and right click I see the option
to delete, but it's greyed out. I thought it might be because they are based
on the Normal.dot Heading Style, but I changed that and still didn't get the
option to delete? I am able to delete other styles without any problem, but
these in particular are causing me issues.

Hi Chris,

Built-in styles, including all the Heading styles, can't be deleted.

What sort of issues are you having with these styles, since you don't use
them?

In Word 2003, you can use the Custom option in the Styles and Formatting
task pane to select which styles you want visible.
