How to delete without opening messages

L

When I receive suspect email messages I delete them
without opening, but when I go to the delete folder to
permanently remove them, I discover that they are open.
How can I make sure that messages that might contain
viruses are deleted without opening.

Do you have the Preview Pane enabled on the Deleted Items folder? If so,
turn it off -- then the only way to "open" the message would be to
double-click it.

You can also bypass the Deleted Items folder entirely by using SHIFT+DELETE
to permanently delete an item.

In addition to what Jocelyn said, you don't have to visit the Deleted Items
folder to empty it. Right-click on it in the Folder View or Outlook Bar (if
you have one) and select "Empty Deleted Items Folder".
