Save the document as a web page -- the graphics get saved separately as GIF
files.

Go to www.gimp.org and download the free one there and install
it. there is a Windows version. It's great.

then copy the picture from the document and paste it as NEW into
GIMP. NOTE: there is a different PASTE command for things pasted
from Windows than for things cut and pasted in GIMP. Read the
commands carefully.

OR: go to www.openoffice.org and download OpenOffice. they have
a drawing module in there. It might work.

The problem is getting the photographis *out* of Word 97.
Unfortunately, for reasons I guess known to Microsoft, they didn't make
this easy. Saving as a HTML files to get them into GIF is a good thing,
and then using The Gimp to edit GIF file is also a good thing. Many
ways to edit the GIF File, though.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

Actually, photos will probably be extracted as JPEGs. In fact, I've saved
Word docs in which inserted GIFs (screen shots) were extracted as JPEGs. Go
figure.
