How to find original doc from a review copy?

Hi

I have an app where I keep some meta-data about a document in a db rather
than with in the doc (there are reasons). Obviously, when someone send a
copy for review, that meta-data becomes separated. WHat I'd like to be able
to do is allow the reviewer to have acces to the same meta data. Word
somehow knows what the original document was, since it knows what to merge it
back into - how does it do this?

Have a custom export process to embed the meta data as say, custom doc
properties, and then a custom import process to bring em back in.
