How to insert or link Xcel files to Outlook tasks?

B

Bill B.

I would like to establish a relationship between tasks which I create in
Outlook 2003 and Xcel and Word files. The task, in this case, is a reminder
to do something with the file. I have tried inserting a link, inserting the
file, and inserting a shortcut. Ideally, I would like only one version of the
Xcel or Word file and I would like it to reside as a permanent file in a
folder of my choice. In this case, I would think, some kind of link would be
most appropriate.

When I try the above, Outlook complains that the task has an "unsafe
attachment". It will allow me to close the task but when I reopen it, it will
not open the link or file. I've gotta believe that it is possible to create
this link. Please help me understand how.

What is the format of the link you've already tried?

I created a shortcut to the file in windows explorer then copied and pasted
it into the task window. Outlook blocks access calling it a potentially
unsafe attachement.

I also inseted tried Insert/Object/Link from the Insert drop down command
menu and created a new link to an excel file. Once again, Outlook blocks
access calling it a potentially unsafe attachement.

Try the following format:

file://c:\foldername\filename.ext

If there are spaces in your folder names and/or filenames, enclose the whole
link in angle brackets like these: < >
