how to maintain original date on files when opened

Word 2002 - I use the date button on the toolbar to insert the date on
correspondence. When I open saved files the date automatically updates
itself. How do I stop this happening?

Stop using the date button for a start! This inserts a date field, whereas
you need a createdate field. You can save a createdate field as an autotext
entry and insert it from a toolbar button. Better still insert the field in
your letterhead templates. For your existing documents select the field,
press ALT+F9, change the word DATE (or TIME) to CREATEDATE. Press F9 to
update and ALT+F9 to toggle the display back to the date.
