how to make a macro to set headings?

I have several hundred poems in several files. I would like to use the
Document Map feature to see all the titles, perhaps after merging everything
into one big file. I don't care about page numbers. I would like to be
able to click on the title and have a macro that would set the heading level
of that title. I believe that's what i need in order to use Document Map.
doing this manually looks like it will be tedious and lengthy

With a copy of your document, try AutoFormat. You might like the results, or
not. It is worth a try. It will depend a lot on how it is set up now and
whether line breaks or paragraph breaks are used to signal the end of lines
in the poetry.
