How to make programmed doubleclick on middle scroll button work?

In Office 2003 the programmed middle scroll button to perform a double click
on a single click does not work when opening files and drilling down through
folders. I have 6 machines with Windows XP and 2 have Office 2002. The mouse
works on machines with Office 2002 but not on any machine with Office 2003.
Installed on 2 machines are Excel 2003 and Word 2003 with Access 2002. The
function works on these machines in Access 2002 but not Excel 2003 or Word
2003. The function does not work on machines with Access 2003. I am convinced
that this is a problem with Office 2003 applications alone. I think it has
nothing to do with Windows XP or the Intellipoint driver in use (have both
4.1 and 5.0 that do not work).

I have an open incident with Microsoft technical support, but we have not
come too far in solving this issue. I have tried most everything suggested on
all of Microsoft.com to no avail. It just doesn't work.

Any help would be appreciated as I have carpal tunnel syndrome and this is
very aggravating.

I set the entire machine up for single click.
In Explorer Tools - Options - Custom and set it to single click.
After doing this a mouse over acts as a single click highlighting things and
a single click becomes a double click and it works in all applications
installed. It takes a while to get used to though.
I then use the middle mouse wheel click as a scroll lock.
I also have carpal tunnel and the less clicking I have to do the better.
