How to reference page numbers in another document

I don't even know if this is possible. Here's a shot.

I have two seperate documents, a Leader Guide and a User Guide. As one would
imagine, the Leader Guide has everything the User Guide has with the addition
of notes, PPT screenshots and various other hints. Currently, the Leader
Guide references page numbers in the User guide.

How can I make these referenced page numbers in the Leader Guide so they can
be automatically updated with any pagination change made to the User Guide?
Can I use an RD code in the Leader Guide to reference a bookmark in the User
Guide? Is there another reference code I can use? This is going to be a job
for a macro won't it... *sigh*

Hi KT,

You don't need a macro.
Bookmark the item (i.e., text/graphic) that you want to reference.
In the Leader Guide, insert an INCLUDETEXT field that specifies the filename
and bookmark that you inserted in the User Guide.
BE SURE to use the ! switch.

Sorry about that first post.

In the User Guide, insert a Page field. Bookmark the page field. You can
also apply hidden text formatting to it.
In the Leader Guide, insert an IncludeText field that references the
bookmark that you used for the Page field in the User Guide.

I have two test documents:
Test.doc
Reference me.doc

In Reference me.doc, I inserted a Page field and bookmarked (name="Test")
it.
In Test.doc I inserted the following field (note the exclamation point
switch)
{ INCLUDETEXT "C:\\Test\\Reference me.doc" Test \! \* MERGEFORMAT }

Sooooo close!!! All of your responses have gotten me far and away closer than
I was, but I have one more question about the page numbers:
Say the Introduction is on page 5.
If I bookmark the page code in the footer it will show up as page 5 in the
Leader Guide... However, if the User Guide changes and now the Introduction
is on page 7, I would have to bookmark THAT page code instead... correct?
What I need is if the Introduction changes pages, that change is reflected
in the Leader Guide.

What I tried was to insert a hidden cross reference to the Introduction
heading showing the page number then tried the code below.
User Guide:
Introduction 5
(introduction is bookmarked as Intro and the 5 is a hidden cross reference
and bookmarked Page)

Leader Guide:
See the {INCLUDETEXT "C:\\UserGuide.doc" Intro /!} on page {INCLUDETEXT
"C:\\UserGuide.doc" Page /!}

This, however, does not work... not sure why. Wish it did. It keeps showing
as 1. Is it because you can't bookmark cross references?

Hi KT,

Well, I wouldn't recommend putting the bookmarked PAGE field in the footer
for the exact reason that you specify: the text or the graphic has to be
able to move more freely.

It might not be working because you have to update the fields. That is, if
you are working on both document simultaneously, then the page number will
not update automatically on its own. Here's what has to happen:

Set up the fields properly (which I think you have).
Update the fields in the User Guide in some way (e.g., Ctrl + A and F9);
yes, that is updating it manually.
Switch to the Leader Guide and update the IncludeText Field.

Yes, it's cumbersome in some ways, but it's also probably the best Word can
do. There are problems with this method, too. Anyone who edits the document
can accidentally extend the bookmark to include text in the bookmark that
they never intended to be included and then your cross references would be
very, shall we say, "Unhappy". I was able to use this method, which I
learned from using a Help Authoring Tool named Doc-To-Help. At first it was
challenging, but I had full control over my documents without a problem of
editorial control and after getting used to the method, I think it worked
very well for the 3.5 years I was using the software.

Sadly, that didn't work. I even put the {PAGE} code in instead of the cross
reference. (It was a big "duh" moment for me when I used that code instead...
oh well)
I fooled around a bit and have found that I can't bookmark any sort of field
for my purposes. Only real text can be pulled into the Leader Guide... any
fields, {page}, cross reference, etc., dosen't let me pull it in.
I even updated, saved and closed all documents then opened the Leader Guide
and updated again to no avail.

After much hair pulling I've realized that I was using the wrong slash in
the switch. It can't get more maddening than that!!
