How to type fractions in Word?

B

Bill Smith

I have Word 2000 and can type fractions by using Insert/Field/Equations&
Fractions/Eq and using EQ \f(a,b) where a is the top number and b the lower
number.
But a friend of mine has Word 2002 and he can't use the above method ..and
gets the nod that he needs to install Microsoft Office XP.

Any thoughts as to why friend cannot do fractions using Word 2002?

Thanks,
Bill

The following have keystroke commands:

¼ (1/4) - Keystroke: Alt+0188

½ (1/2) - Keystroke: Alt+0189

¾ (3/4) - Keystroke: Alt+0190

? (1/3) - No Keystroke

? (2/3) - No Keystroke

? (1/8) - No Keystroke

? (3/8) - No Keystroke

? (5/8) - No Keystroke

? (7/8) - No Keystroke

You can also get to them in Microsoft Word by going to Insert -> Symbol...

Or by using the Windows Character Map in Start menu -> Programs (or All
Programs) -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Character Map

If you are looking to enter in custom fractions, I don't know of any other
way than the method that you have posted (shown below).

Hi Bill,

An EQ field should work in both versions of Word,
if he was using the Equation Editor (Insert=>Object)
then it might not have been installed. Is he letting
the installer complete the action?

I have Word 2000 and can type fractions by using Insert/Field/Equations&
Fractions/Eq and using EQ \f(a,b) where a is the top number and b the lower
number.
But a friend of mine has Word 2002 and he can't use the above method ..and
gets the nod that he needs to install Microsoft Office XP.

Any thoughts as to why friend cannot do fractions using Word 2002?

Thanks,
Bill >>

If you are looking to enter in custom fractions, I don't know of any other
way than the method that you have posted (shown below).
They can be made more convincing. Fiddly but OK if seldom needed :
17/32, say, looks better if done 17(superscript),/,32(subscript)
