Agent is an animated character that speaks the text.
http://www.microsoft.com/msagent/using/userinterface.asp has very good
tutorials and information. I got to this page from the msagentring.org link
I gave you below.
It has an option to also display the text in balloons. The "word balloon"
info on the link above says this: "In addition to spoken audio output, the
Microsoft Agent interface supports textual captioning in the form of text
output in cartoon-style word balloons. Words appear in the balloon as they
are spoken. The balloon hides when spoken output is completed. The Advanced
Character Options window provides options to disable the balloon's display
as well as control attributes related to its appearance."
This is not an Agent newsgroup, and I cannot give you step by step
instructions on how to use Agent because it's been too long since I used it.
But if you install it and try it and have specific problems, you might post
to the Agent support groups. Notice that the msagentring.org link also has a
link to support forums in the navigation pane on the left.
http://www.bellcraft.com/forum/default.asp?CAT_ID=1 There is *very* good
information there. It's a page for MASH -- an Agent Scripting Helper. Or
someone here might be able to help, but we'd need to know what exactly the
specific problem is and what exactly you've done when you've set up the
files/script.
Retrieving text from PPT slides itself is a different issue, actually. If
you need to have the text in a Word document in order to import it into the
Agent engine, then you can in PPT use File/Send to Word and select Outline.
That will send all of your text that's in PPT placeholders to a Word
document where you can copy/paste or import into Agent or whatever. Sorry, I
don't know the specifics of how to get that text into Agent, as it seems to
have been updated since the last time I used it. When I tried it, the text
to be spoken/displayed had to be inserted into the Notes placeholder of the
PowerPoint slide. At first glance, this doesn't seem to be the case anymore,
but I could be wrong.
I would imagine that you can also animate text on a PPT slide to work in
conjunction with the Agent characters.
I would also strongly suggest that you download this
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=b932c4ce-9d60-4824-
be40-e1f48fd63d90&displaylang=en -- It's a good "presentation narration"
sample with good documentation in a Word document.
http://tinyurl.com/6lfsj also has some good, easy to understand info.

You can try a third-party add-in, Vox Proxy. It will help with this.
http://www.vtaide.com/voxproxy.htm
Or, if you want to go the more manual route, start at
http://www.msagentring.org/ I was able to use the instructions and
information there a few years ago to do a demo file with Agent. I don't
believe that the functionality is much different -- if at all -- today, so
you shouldn't have too many problems getting started.
