Hello,
I want use both Office 2003 and 2007.

I understand I can only install one version of Outlook (this is not a big
problem, because Outlook 2007 use same Interface and file format than
outlook 2003).

For all other product (Excel, Word, Access...), when I start a version of
one product which is not the latest I used, I had a windows saying the
osftware is instal, and this take a lot of time.

What is the solution?

Did you install 2003 before 2007? The window you are describing should
only appear for Word and Access. Excel and PPT don't have the same
annoying problem.
For Access & Word, there is nothing you can do about it. The best I can
advise you is to use one version primarily, that's how I get around
going crazy every time...

My solution is one you won't like. I had to remove Office 2007 and re-
install OfficeXP because the two won't "play nice" together and I
*need* Office XP for compatibility with the computers at work.

Too bad because I liked Office 2007 and if I could only have figured
out how to make it open Office XP files w/o converting them, I would be
using Office 2007 now.

Hi David,

You can change the setting for default file format in Office 2007 in the Options=>Save dialog. (In Word 2007 use Alt,T,O,S)
The documents (and the feature sets) should then 'stick' to those of the older verions. If you upgrade to use the 2007 only
features it will try to save the documents in a version that matches those capabilities.

Using a Virtual PC (if the PC can support it) is another approach to running multiple versions of Office

I know that, Bob, you answered that question for me earlier and,
although I'm old, my memory still works, just not often <sigh>

But that doesn't solve my problem, I want it to NOT convert Office XP
files on opening them, I want it to leave them in XP format so I don't
have to save them in the older format. There's multiple reasons for
that, the most important being it takes longer to open a WordXP or
ExcelXP doc than it does if it didn't try to convert them.

If there is a setting to stop it converting older files on opening
them, I can't find it.

The situation is that I almost never have to create a Word or Excel
file (Access isn't used), I usually have to open a file attached to an
email, modify/change/correct/enter additional data and then email it
back as an email attachment. Opening a Word XP file attached to an
Outlook XP message while I'm using Outlook 2007 and Word 2007 is a
nightmare of time, clicking to dismiss error messages, etc. etc. and
then the idea that if I forget to convert it to Office XP format I've
created a file that the folks at work can't open.

Solution: remove Office 2007 and install Office XP unless you or
someone can figure out how to stop the "convert on opening" behavior?

Hi David,

Where are you seeing the documents being converted on opening them? If you've set the file format to legacy, it should be leaving
them 'as is' (i.e. you should see a 'Convert' button in the Office Button menu.

I'm assuming you're saving the attachements to disk first? (Opening them from the IE cache gets a bit 'iffy' <g>.

Can't check now, I'm back to running Office XP. IIRC the documents
were converted on opening regardless of any settings but I'm not
completely sure of that?

If I recall, I found out I had to do that. I don't if I use Office XP

If I recall, I found out I had to do that. I don't if I use
Office XP with Outlook XP, the docs open with no problems.

Tried it again this morning after re-installing Office 2007 in Vista.
It still goes through all kinds of gyrations trying to open Office XP
files but it doesn't convert them, that part is OK, thanks again!

I get repeated popups asking me for my password again, if I cancel them
it finally pops up Word or Excel with the document. All in all, if the
email has a Word or Excell attachment it takes a very long time to get
it to open so.... Office XP won't work, either, I also ran into the
"won't save password" bug trying to run Outlook XP so it appears
webmail from work and my home computer are going to remain incompatible
as long as I'm running Vista, the only fix I see is to reboot into XP
when I check webmail from work which is what I'll probably continue to
do.

I'd like to be able to switch to Vista 64 completely, but it appears
that's some time away, too many problems with drivers, etc. plus this
one.

Maybe I'll try Office 2003 on Vista and see what happens, that should
get rid of the password problem.

Hi David,

Interesting. Are you saving the attachments to disk before opening them? That can sometimes help with Word and Excel files.

As far as Office on 64 bit Windows, welllllll... :)

Yes and no, doesn't seem to make any difference?

I know, basically, it doesn't work or if it does it doesn't work
exactly like I think it should (of course, nothing works like I think
it should but we're not here to discuss women, are we?)
