Href in html pointing to powerpoint

I have an html page with has <href> tag,that <href> tag invokes a powerpoint.
I am getting some weird characters(some squares....) on the page when I try
to open powerpoint thru <href>.Please suggest.

If it's a link to a ppt or pps file and you have either PowerPoint or the
PowerPoint Viewer installed, it should open the file for viewing when clicked
on.
Can you send the link to the page?
