Huge header

How can I get rid of a header that takes up 1/2 of the first page of a new
document even before there is any text in it??

Sounds unlikely to be a header - though it is a possibility. More likely is
that you have changed the vertical alignment to Centre or Justified. Go to
Page Setup, Layout tab and change vertical alignment to TOP.
