hyperlinks in received mail

MS office 2000 outlook (9.0.0.2711). When I receive a message with
hyperlinks shown as icons, nothing happens when I click on them.

Now, if I click on reply and then click on the icons of the hyperlinks they
work.
Any thoughts?

I tried this with the hyperlinks within an e-mail that I couln't get
to work and had the same result. Definitely sounds like an Outlook
problem, rather than an Internet one. So, what's the
cause/solution???
