I am making a word document with 2003 and converting it
to a pdf when i am done. i want to put a return to menu
on the bottom of every page that takes you back to page
one. is there a way to do it instead of manually putting
it on each page. i have tried putting it in a footer but
it won't work. is there no lazy way to do it.

Footers are not in the text plane and thus are inaccessible. The best you
can manage is to put a frame on each page in the text plain but located in
the space the footer would occupy. You can copy and paste to each page, but
that's as close as you are going to get unless someone comes up with a
better plan. Hyperlinks in frames will work.
