Just to clarify, it's a PPT file, then, not a PPTX file, right?
I'm asking because this is a classic error message you'd see when attempting
to open a PPTX file in an earlier version of PPT. You need to install the
compatibility pack (and all High Priority Windows Updates in order for the
compat pack to actually work) to be able to open PPTX files in earlier
versions.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/924074 has more info.
I will also mention that when I've seen this error message in the past, it
usually means the file is completely hosed. Had it happen recently, in fact,
and lost a large chunk of work -- I simply could not recover any part of the
file, and believe me, I tried everything! Maybe you'll be luckier than I.
Here is some information to assist:

Also, Open Office's presentation application, Impress, can often open files
that PPT considers corrupt. Definitely try that as well.

I have exactly the same problem. I have both PPT 2003 and 2007. Neither
one
will open the file even though it was created by the 2003 version. I have
tried every suggestion I can find but to no avail. Any other ideas?

Are you trying to open a PPT 2007 file in PPT 2003, by any chance?

"Powerpoint can't read the outline from <file name>.ppt. No text
converter
is installed for this file type"
Please, does anyone knows how to solve this.
