I am not a Mac user

B

I have a Dell PC; but, recently I have stopped getting auto updates. I tried
to update and it says it does not support Mac users. But, I am not a Mac
user. I have also had to restore back two months to try and get rid of
errors I may have made. It says I need to validate -- I got my software
loaded on the Dell -- but it will not take any codes on the back of the disks
they sent me

Sounds like you've got something royally boogered up on your system. Do you
run a current antivirus on your computer? Any chance you are still within
your warranty period?

B

bishop

Yes, I have Norton anti-everything. I bought my computer last October. I
believe there is a year warranty. Should I call Dell? Microsoft has never
been helpful to me and now I see they charge a fee. Yes, for sure, matie.
It is royally boggered. I ran restore a couple of days ago because things
had got so crazy with email and it said I would not lose any work; but, I
lost a lot of very important pictures. Do you know anyway to get them back?

Oh, and thank you for responding.

Not really and it's not Microsoft's fault that you're having these problems.
You say that you run Norton but do you make sure that your antivirus
definitions are up to date.

I suspect what you *ought* to do is a complete reformat but you'll lose
everything when you do. Start here and see what happens. No guarantees
but...

I'm not suggesting he try to get help from them. That'll happen after
Microsoft helps him. I pointed him to their online system scanner. I suspect
he has a virus or malware issue.

Thank you again. Since you emailed me I have been chatting with Dell. The
first one was very helpful but I accidentally hit a key while he was taking
control of my computer to fix it. I got another person and they were a real
jerk. Told me the other tech was wrong. Sent me through all the same thing,
although he said he had the log right before him. Got antagonistic and then
just shut me down. I tried to take the survey to tell them what I thought,
but it was shut down two. And I have a four year warranty with this
out-sourced services. Oh, my. I will try your fix. Thank you again.

Tell me about it. Did you just read my response about trying to get help
from Dell. Two totally different techs, two attitudes and no way to tell a
supervisor because they are all overseas now. I had such valuable pictures
of Trinity Episcopal Church's 152nd Trinity Feast Day.....all gone. This
second tech said they could restore data; then he contradicted himself. I

That's typical reaction from tech support. Call them again on a different
shift. I'm sure you'll talk to another person. *Maybe* they will be able to
help you. Make sure you tell them about the results of the Symantec thing is
it's not clean.

Good luck.

I really don't think it is a virus or malware because my settings are high
and they automatically run twice a day. I have a computer guru who might
copy all my files so I can reinstall.....but, I tried to reinstall my
microsoft office small business 2003 and it would not let me complete it.
There were two errors in my temp files......wait a minute, if I could figure
out the temp files, that would help...but that is for another night. I have
lost two days of work time now. Oh, and I am a she.

Can't be my firewall, because up until a short while ago (a few weeks
....can't say for sure...take so much for granted these day) all updates were
coming in. Thanks to all of you anyhow. Will let you know if I get the
kinks out and will come back for more suggestioins. The last thing the Dell
guy said to me was to check with my ISP. Why not.

If you are calling Dell US, call them during business hours in Texas. I
have had better experience with Dell's tech support when their main tech
support people in Texas were on the line.

I am in PA as well (1 hr away from Philly) and it has been raining quite a
bit already in the past few days and weeks.

Tell me about it. Did you just read my response about trying to get
help
from Dell. Two totally different techs, two attitudes and no way to
tell
a
supervisor because they are all overseas now. I had such valuable
pictures
of Trinity Episcopal Church's 152nd Trinity Feast Day.....all gone.
This
second tech said they could restore data; then he contradicted himself.
I
am so tired and the humidity is out the ceiling and I am going to turn
this
blasted thing off because now I do not have time to do the word
processing
and publisher brochure I needed to do. Lordy.....what have we
come
to,
I ask you?

:

Ha...wait till you try to get help from Symantec!

| Not really and it's not Microsoft's fault that you're having these
problems.
| You say that you run Norton but do you make sure that your antivirus
| definitions are up to date.
|
| I suspect what you *ought* to do is a complete reformat but you'll
lose
| everything when you do. Start here and see what happens. No
guarantees
| but...

After furious head scratching, bishop asked:

| I have a Dell PC; but, recently I have stopped getting auto updates.
| I tried to update and it says it does not support Mac users. But, I
| am not a Mac user. I have also had to restore back two months to try
| and get rid of errors I may have made. It says I need to validate --
| I got my software loaded on the Dell -- but it will not take any
| codes on the back of the disks they sent me

Just an fyi; 4 times in the last month my wife's Dell got hit by
viruses...seem to effect the updates and help "feature" from Dell.

|I really don't think it is a virus or malware because my settings are high
| and they automatically run twice a day. I have a computer guru who might
| copy all my files so I can reinstall.....but, I tried to reinstall my
| microsoft office small business 2003 and it would not let me complete it.
| There were two errors in my temp files......wait a minute, if I could
figure
| out the temp files, that would help...but that is for another night. I
have
| lost two days of work time now. Oh, and I am a she.
