I have inserted a symbol but it won't print in the document

Does anyone understand why a symbol won't print. If I use the symbol as a
bullet before the paragraph it prints just fine, but if I insert it in other
locations, it doesn't print.

What symbol? I will see if it will print here. The font name would be helpful as
well. Publisher version too.

Meri, The symbols print fine for me, in the middle of sentences or anywhere else
I insert them. Does your printer have built in fonts?

The keystrokes are... put the insertion point where you want the symbol.
Click "insert" from the menu above, click "symbol", then choose the symbol
you want from the drop down box. I don't think my printer is the issue as I
can print using our inhouse servers array of printer choices, from inkjet to
laserjet to the copier with the same result.

Try using a different font, Webdings or ZapfDingbats. What symbol is the
problem?

It is a check box used on a form that someone will manually check and mail
back to me

I tried your suggestion of using webdings and that worked. I had to just go
through the alphabet to find the checkbox since I don't know how to show the
images of webdings. Fortunately, I started with capital leters---and it was
a capital C and not a lower case Z! Can you tell me how to see the various
items under a font like webdings?

Meri, I don't see the check box in the symbol font. There are blanks, when you
insert the blank it is a check box. When I print the symbol it is very light,
unlike the other symbols. Use another font, I suggest Wingdings.

Insert, symbol, select Webdings. Dingbats are always going to have to be
selected from the insert menu, there really isn't an alt+**** code.
