Without having so much as an indication what version of Office you're using
it's impossible to suggest anything other than the fundamentals;

1- Make sure your version of Office is fully updated,
2- Make sure OS X is fully updated,
3- Run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions,
4- Restart your Mac.

If you continue to have a problem reply here with version specific
information plus any additional details you can supply. For example: Does it
happen with all documents or just some? Has anything els changed recently on
your Mac? Is this a new installation or one that has been running OK
previiously?

Every situation is a bit different so without adequate information there
isn't much anyone can do to help you. If there were a univeral "Fix This"
button you would have found it by now :)

I have the same problem.

Both Word and Excel freeze my desktop sometimes, forcing me to reboot
(power-off).
(Force-quiting by keys does not work, neither does tabbing to a
different app. The screen
is frozen with a spinball).

I always keep my mac and office up-to-date with patches, currently I'm
running
Snow Leopard 10.6.3 with Excel and Word 12.2.4.

In Word it seems to be triggered by a font change. If I try to make
something bold
or italic there'a a chance on a freeze.
In Excel it may freeze when I go back into a cell to update text (not
the font).

I don't use Office all that much, so although I "only" had 3 freezes
in the last month
it still amounts to about 15% of my usage.

Regards,
Leon

Your issue is not the same as the one experienced by the user to whom you
have replied -- you're using a completely different version of OS X. For
future reference please don't dive into any existing thread simply because
it "seem" to be the same... Almost every issue is somewhat different even if
the symptoms are similar. It's better to submit a NEW message where the
focus can be placed on your situation & not get tangled up with another.

It sounds like what you're experiencing is one of the infamous Snow Leopard
font conflicts. Shut down all apps then launch Apple's Font Book & run the
Resolve Duplicates routine as well as the Validate Fonts routine. Also, go
to: UserName/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008 then delete the file
named Office Font Cache (12). [If you have another utility that clears font
caches you might use it also.]

Shut down the Mac for a minute or two & see if conditions improve when you
start up.
