I LIKE Entourage 2004!

R

Rick Copeland

Had to chime in with some positive feedback, to balance the negative. Yes,
my experience is colored by the fact that I haven¹t had major problems. And
I¹m only using the test drive version (temporarily). But firing up
Entourage 2004 and having it copy every mail message and preference from
Entourage X in a matter of minutes was sweet. And I created 3 new projects
within the first hour; love the new feature. This will DEFINITELY make me
more productive.

Exchange support is great as far as I¹m concerned. Is it 100% there? No.
But it¹s good enough for now, as far as I¹m concerned. I know they¹re
working to make it better...

Tell Microsoft¹s MBU they did a nice job. And a big cheer for the MVPs,
who fix problems, don¹t snap back at irate users, and do it all without a
salary.

Thanks,
Rick

Sent using the Microsoft Entourage 2004 for Mac Test Drive.

I disagree. I¹m at a loss as to how it can take the worlds largest computer
company more than 3 years to port a classic app to carbon. The most useful
features of exchange (public calendars etc) are still missing. Hmm. I wonder
why!?

Could they do it? Certainly.

Would it be easy? - Certainly not.

Will it make them more of a profit than other activities they ARE doing? -
presumably not, or they would have done it.

And please, don¹t confuse the ŒWorlds Largest Computer Company¹ with the Mac
BU, which is only about 200 strong (including all the managerial, marketing,
QA, testing and non-developer roles). In terms of actual hands-on code
writers, there¹s probably not much more than a couple of dozen. They have to
select priorities, and the number of Mac customers who absolutely need
public calendars on an exchange server is no where near the majority.

Entity Collinson, Garry spoke thus:

Not me, I've gone back to Entourage X until this version gets some problems
fixed.
The worst? Mailing List Manager won't send list mails to a folder, resulting
in hundreds of list mails in my inbox.

This is not a problem for the vast majority of people.

Is this an identity that you have imported/updated, or is it a new one,
created in E04?

Open up the MLM entries for editing, and re-select the folder that should
receive the mail. It is possible that something has gone adrift and the
folder reference has lost it's bearings.

Then maybe M$ should stop using phrases such as Œfull exchange support¹ in
their marketing, as this is simply not true.

Lots of new eye candy, but little in improved functionality. Is this one of
the main priorities ;-)

P

Polzin, Mark

?? Really. I am surprised by that. The only reason I use Exchange is for the
GAL and public calendars!

Agreed. Exchange with Outlook is Groupware. Right now Entourage is little
more than an email client. I would have stuck with Quickmail if I new this
was going to happen.

C

Collinson, Garry

We use Kerio as our email server. Best OS X mailserver IMHO. Communicate
also good, but a little bit clumsy in admin.

B

Barry Wainwright

But there are more entourage users WITHOUT access to exchange servers than
there are with.

C

Collinson, Garry

Ahh. I see your point. I prefer Mail.app for just email. People buy
entourage for IMAP/POP mail? I'll shut up now ;-)

My guess is that the folder references were broken in the upgrade. You can
probably fix it by simply reselecting the folder for your MLM rules.

"The single most popular request we've heard since launching Office v. X is
that our customers need an Exchange solution for Mac OS X, and we're ecstatic
to begin satisfying that need through the most popular PIM on the Mac
platform," said Tim McDonough, director of marketing and business development
for the MacBU at Microsoft. "We recognize that many of our customers use
Exchange for their server-side communications and need a solution that's made
specifically for Mac OS X. By building the Exchange solution into Entourage X,
we're giving users of Mac core Exchange functionality and cross-platform
compatibility in an e-mail client designed to meet their needs."

They don't, Garry. Show me where Microsoft makes this claim. Here's the page
I looked at, and it has no such claim:

My Mistake. I misunderstood 'core exchange functionality' as meaning that of
'full exchange support.' An easy mistake to make for average customer,
wouldn't you say!?

P

Polzin, Mark

The key phrase there is "core Exchange functionality." One would think
though that if their "single most popular request" is "an Exchange solution
for Mac OS X" they would have given us the whole solution. He says its "an
email client designed to meet their needs." Not quite.

I suppose, but how should they say it? No marketing person is ever going to
pitch their product negatively: "It doesn't have all the features of Win
Outlook, but it has some of the most important ones!". Everything you need
to know is detailed on that page. It's up to the consumer to fully read and
understand what it means, rather than making optimistic assumptions. IMHO.

It can be ported, muppet!

After you've finished porting it, come back and let us know.

Muppet... Is that supposed to be a derogatory term? OK, I'll play along...
*ahem* "I am really offended that you would call me 'muppet'"

No David, It's not derogatory. Just a friendly reality check, that's all ;-)
When I've ported it, I'll be sure to send you a copy of the first alpha!
