I LIKE Entourage 2004!

Had to chime in with some positive feedback, to balance the negative. Yes,
my experience is colored by the fact that I haven¹t had major problems. And
I¹m only using the test drive version (temporarily). But firing up
Entourage 2004 and having it copy every mail message and preference from
Entourage X in a matter of minutes was sweet. And I created 3 new projects
within the first hour; love the new feature. This will DEFINITELY make me
more productive.

Exchange support is great as far as I¹m concerned. Is it 100% there? No.
But it¹s good enough for now, as far as I¹m concerned. I know they¹re
working to make it better...

Tell Microsoft¹s MBU they did a nice job. And a big cheer for the MVPs,
who fix problems, don¹t snap back at irate users, and do it all without a
salary.

Thanks,
Rick

Personally, I think the 2004 "upgrade" sucks. I think it needs to go
back into development for another 6 months.

Why?

What problems have you encountered?

Entity Dave Cortright spoke thus:
Mailing List Manager won't send list mails to a folder, resulting
in hundreds of list mails in my inbox.

I deleted all my database stuff and reimported from Entourage X.
No change.

Paul suggested they aren't really "mailing Lists", so how do I verify this?
What's the troubleshooting technique? How does this version identify a
"Mailing List" compared to the last version?

Did you try editing the MLM entry and reselecting the destination folder?

Yes, I did that and several other things, any other ideas? To tell you the
truth, I'm a little confused exactly where this information is kept. Is it
in the Preferences/Microsoft folder or in the Library/Microsoft User Data
folder?

Maybe this version requires the setting the email to a "category" to be
identified as a list mail?

This has me stumped.

My approach here would be to simply delete a rule from MLM and then recreate
it. Something, obviously, is fouled up, so try doing it over rather than
struggling to find out what's wrong.

If, when you create a new rule in MLM, the "List address" shows up as your
own address, you've got a problem. You will need to locate a message that
actually came from the list in question and copy the "From" address into
your MLM "List Address" field. Most lists send mail addressed to the list
itself, but some actually direct the mail to the address of each list
member. For those, you have to supply the "From" address in MLM.

If you do not catch this when creating a rule in MLM, suddenly all mailed
addressed to YOU will be affected by the MLM rule!

If you want to test a message to see if Entourage thinks it is from a
mailing list:

Set up a new Rule (but don't enable it) with criteria "is from a mailing
list". Make it take some innocuous action like setting a special category or
setting its priority to LOW. Then, select the message to test and run the
rule from the Message->Apply Rules menu.

I like it as well. However, I am completely dismayed that the Exchange
support, while superior to that of Entourage V. X. 10.1.4, still isn¹t
complete. Especially in light of the revelation that it was their single
biggest request.

I was able to connect to my Exchange server painlessly (thank you, MBU). But
there are some limits to my functionality within the Exchange server. I can
not add ³common² exchange inboxes that every Office2000 user has access to.
Although I can see all the public folders I have access to on my Office2000
box, I can¹t access any of them.

What¹s even sadder is that the freely downloadable Outlook 2001 for the
Classic Mac OS handles all of these just fine.

I¹ll agree that Entourage 2004 is a really good app. But if the #1 request
from your users is full Exchange support, and you deliver about 50% of the
solution, as a developer, you have missed the mark. Please MacBU implement
the remaining 50% to bring Entourage 2004 full Exchange functionality.

Thanks for listening -

Well, obviously I touched a nerve. And I agree that full Exchange support
is not there, although for the way I use Entourage, it is sufficient. I can
have Public folders, Calendar, and can view others free/busy schedule. I
don't need support for common exchange inboxes, and other sought-after
features. Still, I recognize that I'm just one user...

In regards to public folders, I'm particularly curious about the statement
"Although I can see all the public folders I have access to on my Office2000
box, I can¹t access any of them." I've seen this mentioned in other posts,
too, but I don't understand. I have access to all my Public folders, no
problem. Had it with Exchange Server 2000 and Entourage X, Ex Server 2003
and Ent X, and now with Ex Server 2003 and Ent 2004. My account setting is
"xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/public," where 'xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx' is the IP address of the
Exchange Server. This seems to work fine for me. Am I missing something?

Well, I DO require exchange support, and overall I remain quite happy
with E2004. Entourage X would occasionally duplicate changed contacts
on the exchange server, but so far I have not seen this behavior from
2004. I like the fact that it tells you when it is syncing with the
Exchange server, and whereas I had to use Mail.app from home since I
would keep getting error messages with Entourage X when it would
unsuccessfully try to connect to the Exchange server for work (I got
lazy and didn't want to keep tinkering with the Accounts manager all
the time), there is no issue with this in 2004. Only glitch I'm
finding so far is that I have to quit Entourage 2004 and then reopen
it when I initially wake my iBook up upon arrival at work, since it
will otherwise not connect to the Exchange server.

Yes, it is not everything that Outlook is. I think, however, that for
the MBU to meld Outlook Express 5.x with a full PIM and finally a good
measure of Exchange functionality (not 100%, but pretty good for most
users), is worthy of applause. And I want to qualify this, in that I'm
very demanding of software applications and work entirely with PC
users, so my praise does not come lightly.

Strange, that doesn't happen for me. At any rate, you can try toggling "Work
Offline" on and then off again. This might kick start Entourage to connect
to the Exchange server again w/o having to quit an relaunch.

It's not. Maybe from some users, but certainly not the majority.

"The single most popular request we've heard since launching Office v. X is
that our customers need an Exchange solution for Mac OS X, and we're
ecstatic to begin satisfying that need through the most popular PIM on the
Mac platform," said Tim McDonough, director of marketing and business
development for the MacBU at Microsoft.

"An Exchange solution" is not the same thing as "full Exchange support".
Entourage 2004 is absolutely an Exchange solution, and for people like me
who only need to do basic e-mail and personal contacts and calendar, it's
great. I stand by my claim that full Exchange support is something only a
small minority of Mac users care about.
