Ok, I don't know what i've done but everytime I try and open any windows
files or office files it comes up with the message 'Powerpoint cannot read
the file (and then filename)' I don't have Powerpoint fully installed and
never have as I don't use it but for some reason my computer is trying to
open everything through Powerpoint!
Please help! I'm on windows xp if that makes any difference.
Thanks in advance.

Sounds like your file associations are messed up. Right click on a document
(word document), and then select Open With. Point it at Word and then check
the checkbox that says always use this program for these types of files.

Thanks. I tried that and I can open individual files that way but I can't
open Word or other programs by clicking on Word etc. I also can't open any of
my digital camera software, anti virus software or even Windows address book.
I had suggested to me to try system restore but it just comes up with the
message 'Powerpoint cannot read C:/Windows/system etc'
