I push send/receive but don't see status in lower right-hand corne

My email comes and goes automatically just fine - every 15 minutes. But if I
manually hit the send/receive button, nothing happens and I don't see the
status report at the bottom right of the screen like all the other users in
the office. How can I get that turned on?
