Identify Author of Web Page - on a multi author web-site

I am building a web-site that is currently hosted on a sharepoint server.
There are several other authors and we want to have any changed pages marked
with the id of the person doing the change.

I want this to be on every page and have tried Insert | Web Component |
Substitution option with the variable 'author' (vti_author in the generated
code) which only ever shows my name even after other authors have edited that
page.

Wherwe am I going wrong?

What do I need to do to get the effect I want?

Thanks, Stefan, for your reply but unfortunately this is not the solution as
all updaters/authors already have and use their own ids.
