IIS won't let me upload to _private

IIS won't let me upload to _private. I've tried altering folder permissions in Front Page, but it doesn't help. I would be grateful for any assistance .

The permissions for the _private folder is controlled by the FP extensions. Why are you trying to
upload to this folder?

My hosting account with Dotnetted restricts uploads to _private - could
there be problems with that?

Thomas A. Rowe

Yes, if it is restricted by your web host, how do you expect to upload to it then?

I read this on another newsgroup
Since it seems that you are on a Windows server, sign into the server
(File open web - http://www.example.com) or if on FP 2003 you should
see the server files on the right.

Right click on the folder that you wish to change permissions and and
go to properties. Uncheck Allow scripts to be run and check allow
anonymous uploads to this directory

You do "Not" want to allow "any" anonymous activity in the _private folder.

Thnaks, Steve

I hope I am not hijacking this thread, but do you have some ideas as to how
to allow a file containing the hit count to be updated by any visitor?

One idea that occurs to me is to put it in its own folder and check
"Allow anonymous uploads to this directory"
for this folder/directory only.

At the moment, I only have one file in the _private folder, so it is
academic for me.

The hit counter file should never be uploaded from the local PC if it is already in being used on
the live/remote server.

Thanks, Thomas.
That makes sense, but could one not first comment out the call to the Hit
counter on the remote server, then it would be safe to upload it. Then
uncomment out the call

And in any case, my site (below) is very low volume.

Thomas A. Rowe

No, as it is a individual file. You would have one for each page that has a hit counter.

You either open the live site and update the count on the live page and save it,
or
open the live site and open the pagename.htm.cnt file in notepad and edit the entry.
or
in the disk based web, right click the pagename.htm.cnt file and remove the "Do not publish" setting and then
right click it again and select publish.

The hit count files in _private are automatically marked as "Do not publish" so they don't over write the ones
on the server when a user selects "Publish changed files."
