Images appear as black square

Whenever I insert a piece of clip art, word art or an
image into a Word document it appears on the screen as a
black square. However, when I print it out the image
appears OK

any ideas as to what is going on and how to prevent it?

Make sure that "Picture placeholders" is not checked on the View tab of
Tools | Options.
