Implement Project Server without Analysis Services

M

Mike Kleiman

We are weighing our implementation options for Project Server and one option
we're considering is starting out without Analysis Services to reduce
financial and resource implementation requirements.

With this particular option, we would add Analysis Services at a later phase
but we need to understand what we give up in the interim by going this route.
We also want to know if this is technically a bad idea e.g. some tools just
don't like being retrofitted.

Thanks,

Analysis Services provides the Data Analysis views used by executives and
resource managers for high-level reporting on all project and all resources
in your Project Server 2007 system. Given the power of Data Analysis views,
I can't imagine implementing Project Server 2007 without that functionality.
Just a thought. Hope this helps.

Also, to add to cousin Dale's comments....

The financial impact of not implementing AS is minimal, as it is included as
part of the SQL CAL, so from a licencing perspective you don't have anything,
UNLESS you implement SQLEXPRESS, and this is not recommended for anything
other than the most basic implementation or demo env. If you do implement
SQLEXPRESS and decide to move at a later date, this will cost a whole lot
more in resource than just doing it now (I've done a couple of
MSDE/SQLEXPRESS to SQL Server migrations for project server and they weren't
necessarily pretty!)
