Import project into project

K

Kay

Hi
this sounds so simple, still I could not figure out how to do it.
I have several projects in several msp files.
Now I want to import them all into one file and use
them in one msp file.
Don't argue why I would do it.
So I used project and said:
Import project
But it does not take on the data properly.
The start end dates vary etc.
Only the structure seems to be stable.
Any idea what I am doing wrong?

Hi,

You mean Insert Project don't you?
I can't reproduce any change of dates. as lonk as when you insert, you keep
"Link to Project" checked on
When you have link to propject off, what you see is the difference in
working times between the inserted project and the project you inserted it
in.

Hi
thanks
what I need: I started with small projects all in individual files.
But now find it
easier to have them in one, once and for all.
So no multi project management with many files, small projects all in
one mpp

Sorry for being not precise

In that case, Kay, your best bet is to simply copy each set of tasks and
paste them into a new project. To ensure you copy everything, click the
minus sign next to the project summary to close down a project. then click
on the ID zero to highlight the project summary and then copy. After
pasting into a blank project, click the plus sign to open it up again.
Check you've copied all the data before going on to the next. When
finished, archive the old projects. Let us know how you get on.

I have the same need. One initial problem I had was that the project start
date for the master project and the imported project were different - this
not surprisingly messed up all the start/end dates when the tasks were
copy/pasted into the master project, so watch out for this.

I tried Mike's suggestion and it seems to works OK; there are a few slight
discrepancies in dates but not too much to worry about. I don't have the time
to investigate but I'm sure it's some subtlety of the working time/calendars
etc (it usually is)
