Importing from Ecel into Outlook

I have a large addreess list provided to me in Excel format. I know how to import that file into Outlook. All fields imprt fine except for the email address which is converted to a single letter ...b or A etc. If import the email address into another field e.g. Company it comes in fine but is then not recognised as an email address for sending email. Any Ideas?
