Importing from Excel Project Template

T

Trac Taylor

Hello:

I am very new to MS Project. I downloaded the trial version. I am trying
to set up the next project. I found and downloaded a Excel Project Template.
It has the following fields, ID, Name, Duration, Start, Deadline, Resource
Names, Notes.
When I use this template, it imports great.

My problem is, I am trying to add the PRIORITY field so it will be imported
as well. I tried to add a field called "PRIORITY" and when I import the
spreadsheet, MS Project locks up. Since, this was the first time for me to
try and add the Priority, I believe this is the cause of the Lock up.

Thanks for any help that you can give me.

Hi Trac,

What data are you entering into the Priority field in the MS Excel
spreadsheet? The priority field in project is a number field from 0 to 1000.

Hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Julie:

I am entering in numbers from 1 - 1000.

Do you think it is the field name I am using that is confusing MS Project?
I typed it as "Priority".

Can this field even be imported using this template?

Thanks
Trac

Hi Trac,
Where did you get the Excel template? Without seeing the Excel template, it
is tough to know if the template can be modified with additional information.

You may import any excel spreadsheet into MS Project, but you'd have to map
the fields manually. Depending upon the number of tasks in your project, it
may be more efficient to simply copy and paste or manually enter the priority
information in to the project you imported. The name priority shouldn't be
causing the problem and when I tested a sample import, the name priority in
the Excel file just simply meant that project guessed correctly the field in
import the data into.

Hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Hey Julie:

Well, I think I figured it out.

When I was trying to import, when the option "What is the format of the data
you want to import?"

I chose "Project Excel Template". This was the one getting stuck on my
spreadsheet.

When I chose "Only Selected Data", and "New Map", it worked. So I guess I
was just using the wrong options.

Thanks for your help,

Trac
