Inbox for Exchange account no longer updates in Entourage 2008

R

ryan.breen

I upgraded to Entourage 2008 a week ago, and everything was initially
working well with my corporate Exchange account. However, since
yesterday the Inbox has not updated while messages to other folders
are received successfully. Outlook on Windows and OWA both show
messages being received to the Inbox and any other folders.

I have tried restarting the system in hopes that some process had
simply died. I would prefer not to create a new Identity as that is a
bit of a nuclear option, and I don't want to do that each week if this
is going to happen frequently. Is there a way to diagnose and fix the
issue?

Thanks,
Ryan

No reason why it should be a recurring problem - it's not a commonly
reported problem by any means.

Deleting and recreating the account isn't all that painful - pretty much
everything in terms of mail, events and contacts is recovered (except
categories).

I have exactly the same problem since yesterday Feb. 8. Everything
worked fine until... lunch (GMT).

this is what works:
- sending mails through entourage
- receiving junk mail

- running outlook under parallels
- drafting emails in outlook
- having the drafts in entourage

Receiving mails in my entourage inbox does not work!

Any help is appreciated,
M

The same thing that happens when I allow it to synchronize
automatically -- the status area in the bottom right corner says 'Now
updating Inbox' and the progress bar throbber animates for a few
minutes. At the end of that time, the animation and status text go
away, but none of the messages have been retrieved.

I have a fairly large account with around 1 GiB of data, due to many
messages with attachments, so recreating the account actually is
painful -- it took about 10 hours the first time, far slower than
synchronizing Outlook from the same location.

Thanks,

Not a single error logged in my case.

I have moved my messages from the inbox to a local folder in
entourage. however, owa and outlook still show all mails.

The Error Log option in the Window menu is ghosted, so I can't open it

Hi Ryan!

That's an excessive time, but I don't need to tell you that, do I? ;-)

What is your Exchange Server address? Are you trying to use an external
Outlook Web Access (OWA) address while inside your company network? If
so, then point Entourage directly to your Exchange Server (an internal
server).

Hope this helps!

Hi,

I have the same problem. I VPN into the office, talk directly to
Exchange and it has updated my Sent items, Contacts, Calendar, Public
Folders completely and continues to do so. My Inbox however stops at
around 2000 messages (from a total of around 13,000) and thinks it is
synchronised. Office 2007 in the same scenario (i.e. same exchange
server) on my various Windows PC's is fine, as is Outlook Web Access.

I've tried deleting Office 2008 completely (including the data files)
and re-installing and it still has the same problem.

I'm reasonably tech-savvy and I'd guess there is a problem with the
product but does anyone have any ideas? At the moment I'm tempted to
send Office 2008 back and go back to Windows-world...

Thanks,
Richard.

Just further to this, my local Outlook data files (on Windows) are
pretty large, probably 2Gb each for Inbox and Sent Items because I've
kept everything I've received/sent for the last two years. Under
Entourage my Sent Items seems to synchronise fully (about 11,000
items, approx 1.8Gb) and continues to receive new items.

I replied to this Sunday, but it doesn't appear to have made it
through. Hopefully this isn't a duplicate.

The Exchange Server is internal to our corporate network, so it's
local to me when I'm in the office and I use a VPN to connect from
home. In both cases, I have the same issue, but Outlook on Windows
works fine.

Interesting. That matches my experience exactly, and we both have
large user profiles. That may be the common thread.

Hi Ryan!

Can you verify my question? Are you using a back-end server address or a
front-end OWA address? You generally don't want to use an OWA address
internally. In other words, while inside your company network (or VPN)
you don't want to use an address that you'd normally use while outside
your network.

Also, the Inbox is special and is synchronized more frequently that
other folders. Create folders outside of your Inbox and file messages
there. Reduce the size of your Inbox. Keep it as lean as possible.

Hope this helps!

Back-end server address in the 10.x.x.x private space. Outlook and
Entourage never use the front-end OWA address.

No thanks. I'd rather the software work for me rather than me work
for it. After all, Outlook on Windows doesn't have issues.

Why? I know that's the old conventional wisdom for Outlook users, but it
doesn't seem to matter to Entourage, and especially not to Entourage 2008.

The "OWA" address is just the client access server (CAS or front end), which
may or may not be on the same machine as the mailbox server (MBX or back
end). In Entourage 2004 I never found any functional difference between
connecting to the CAS versus the MBX from inside the local network or via
VPN. From outside without VPN there is no choice but to connect to the CAS.

In Entourage 2008 several functions (Out of Office Assistant for example)
work only if Entourage is connected to the CAS. You can still connect to the
MBX from inside the local network, but you lose some functionality by doing
so.
Also, the Inbox is special and is synchronized more frequently that

My bet is that will be the answer. Ryan and Richard (who reported the same
problem) both admitted to huge Inboxes (13,000 messages in Richard's case).
Ryan says Outlook doesn't have a problem with an Inbox that size, but that
hasn't been our experience.

For what little it's worth, my box has a substantially larger Inbox
and has no issues on Entourage 2008. Very small sample sizes, to be
sure.

Just FYI I've logged this issue with Microsoft but am just going
through the "have you turned it on" level of support at present.
Support log SRX1059074675ID - OFF2008.

Does anyone know if the following Console message could be anything to
do with it. I get the same thing repeated every 10-12 minutes.
Doesn't seem to be directly related to when I try and sync the Inbox.

19/02/2008 12:33:21 FileSyncAgent[234] LOCK /Shared (FAILED),
httpStatusCode:424, errorType:100 (domain=DAVErrorDomain, code=13),
transactionState:5, txnId:8047DF92-93C1-449D-879E-03FD61D6A4F6, auto-
retries=0, manual-retries=0

As per suggestions above I've tried moving a chunk (5,000 emails) of
my Inbox into new Exchange folder (i.e. creating an "Inbox archive
2006") to drop the size of my Inbox but I need to search through all
emails so this wouldn't be a long term solution. This new folder
sync's perfectly with Exchange but my Inbox still doesn't mirror or
sync to Exchange.

I've tried rebuilding the database this morning using the database
tool but with no effect.

Seeing as no one seems to have any idea is there someone at Microsoft
who could actually point Entourage 2008 at a large Exchange account
(Inbox, Sent Items, Calendar etc) and see if it works for them?

Cheers,
Richard.

p.s. please don't shoot me but I've just found out we're running
Exchange V5.0. Still works fine on Office 2007 though...

Same with me, I have around 50 messages in my inbox and since yesterday, may 14th, lunchtime exactly the same problem. Is there any solution available yet? Doesn't sound like a huge problem, but it is one. Felix
