Inbox is sluggish

Outlook 2002 works fine except the inbox is sluggish.
When moving through emails received Outlook appears to
hangup, but will finally open the email after several
minutes have passed.

Can anyone help solve this problem?

Try disabling the Instant Messaging option.

I have seen this problem many times as a system admin. Most of the time, the
problem was that the inbox would have hundreds or even thousands of messages
in it. If you reduce the inbox to just a few messages and move the rest to
other folders or delete them, that could speed things up tremendously.
