indexing or alphabetizing?

Barbara

I hope someone can help me. I have typed a long word document. I have used Headings 1, 2 and 3. After I got done with the document, I realized that I want to generate a list of these headings in alphabetical order. I tried inserting a table of contents, and it inserted, but I can't find a way to sort the list into alphabetical order.

Alternatively, I tried adding an index, but can't find a simple way to tell it to include in the index all of the headings 1, headings 2 and headings 3.

Does anyone have a suggestion that could help me here? I would surely appreciate it.

Barbara,

I haven't given this a great deal of thought and perhaps there is a better
way (a much better way).

Save your document to a new document. Use Table>Sort>Sort by Paragraph.
Then use Edit>Replace>More>Format>Style and go through 1 by 1 of to replace
each style that you used other than Heading 1, 2, or 3 with nothing,

You should be left with an Headings listed in alphabetical order. Copy this
list and paste back into your original document.

Select the TOC you created and press Ctrl+Shift+F9. This will unlink the
field and convert it to ordinary text. Then select it again and use Table |
Sort to alphabetize it.
