indexing

Does anyone know if Vista Business will index OneNote 2003 files. It doesn't
appear to work.

I have installed OneNote 2003 and checked filter and rebuilt index but it
doesn't want to index OneNote files?

Does indexing work with OneNote 2003?

TIA

It should work fine - could be the OneNote IFilter is somehow not installed
properly. Did you try running OneNote's Detect & Repair? (Help menu)

Tried repair, didn't work. Tried WDS on XP with OneNote 2003. Doesn't work.
I don't think the filter works with OneNote 2003 only 2007. Poor show
Microsoft :(

Dumb question: Is there an iFilter for ON2003 working with WDS 3.x?

I don't have OneNote 2003 in front of me to test on right now, but I seem to
recall that it should work. There certainly is an iFilter for 2003 - has
been for quite some time. Let me see if I can get my hands on an ON2003 box
in the next few days to try it.

Still: Where to get it from?

There is an IFilter that ships with OneNote 2003, but it is rather
unlikely that WDS would be happy with it. The OneNote 2007 filter (which
unfortunately requires the full OneNote 2007 install atm) is able to
work with WDS and filter OneNote 2003 files.

Noted in ON <g>.

BTW, as I may have your ear (although it's OT):
During the Beta I had serious troubles with a corrupted WDS on my
TabletPC.
On my desktop I meanwhile have Vista. I don't know, but someway
shreddered the Indexing for WDS' brother "Windows search". Indexing
nothing at all anymore but piling up tons of error events.
This is just awful with a system based on Indexed search :-( :-(
AFAICS there will be no way about a re-install.
But I fear to loose my carefully done settings in Windows and many
applications.

Do you happen to know if there would be any way to re-install "Windows
Search" and Indexing separately?
Perhaps there might be a way to clear wrong things in the registry. Do
you know where I may ask about the problem??

Thanks again

Sorry, I know next to nothing about WDS (whether in Vista form or as a
standalone), aside from what pertains to OneNote integration. In all
cases where I had a machine with a busted WDS install, I either had an
alternate easily available or could easily rebuild the machine, so I
never had to troubleshoot WDS installs.

I'll see if anyone knows. In the meantime, perhaps you could ask in
microsoft.public.windows.vista.general? The folks over there might have
a better idea.

With the Beta id had bothered me for months.
And now have done quite tweaking with Vista so that I'm really afraid
of a fresh install from scratch.
I'll see if anyone knows.

This would be very kind of you.
One of the biggest problems nowadays with the complexity of software is
to find someone who knows someone who might have an idea on how to
reach someone who might know something {grin, siiiigh}

Will do so.
I had asked in the respective German NG already. To no avail {siiiigh}.

Thanks again

FYI

I installed trial of OneNote 2007 and IFilter works on 2003 files. Stopped
it 'upgrading' files and changed file association back to 2003. Rebuilt
index and Voila! If I just leave it alone I hope the software will just time
out but the IFilter will still work. We'll see in 60 days..

Good to know! Thanks for checking this out, and definitely keep us
updated on how this works out.

Good to know for helping those working with 2003.

P.S. Are you really doing work with ON2003?
IMHO the new features and improvements are worth the price for
upgrading
multiple times.

I've had a look at ON2007, please enlighten me, what are the killer new
features you are talking about?

For a comparison pls see

I worked with ON2003 for a couple of weeks. Then I jumped to the ON2007
Beta.
To name the "killer" features would make a looooong list.
The main one for me:
- organization of the content - not just *ONE* notebook;
- automatic synching between different computes (mainly notebook and
desktop - no other software handle the problems of replicating data in
such an easy way);
- Index search inside ON and from the desktop with ON;
- automatic OCR and indexing of text in images.

To quote myself: "He who still works with ON2003 instead of upgrading,
punishes himself day by day and hour by hour.

Thanks, but it does fine for my needs. I'm just not a poweruser who can
justify £70 for the upgrade.

Really sad :-(
And how about upgrading and get a power user? <gbg>

I guess I would not be one, had I got stuck with the first version
which was a typical MS "first shot" - just to mention Word 1.0 and 2.0,
PowerPoint 1.0 and 2.0 or Access 1.0 which were hardly usable under
professional aspects.

All the best
Rainald
