informaion on drive change

Iinstalled an exterrior removable disc and for some reason the computer
automatically has started to go ot that drive and e-labeled it to the D
drive. Where my restore information was stored on the D drive, now it has
been labeled as the "D" drive and I can no longer back-up my work.

How do I exchange the drive letters so that the computer will recognize the
new location? I had no idea he computer woud rename the drives or i would
never have plugged it in at all!! I had the computer set on automatic backup
and for some reason, I can't get the computer to address this issue for
back-up. I don't understand how it would automatically re-label the drives.

I am running Microsoft Vista. The hard deive was the "C" drive, but
partitioned for the D drive to store the BACKUP information. Now the "D"
drive has the back-up informationand the external where the backup is stored
is labeld E driveand when I go to backup theC drive, it will not even give me
the choice.

Can I delete the "D" drive and re-boot and let the computer relabe the "E"
drive to "D" drive? Will the computer relable the partitioned part of the "C"
drive ans the "D" drive?

HELP!!!
