Insert picture from file-Unsupported graphic error message

Maybe someone has seen this before:
"This application cannot open this file. This file is an unsupported
graphic format or may be damaged. Try opening the graphic in another
application."
The error occurs when trying to import PDFs and TIFFs in Microsoft
Powerpoint X and Word X. The files import fine on other Macs in our
area running the same OS (10.2.6) and same Office version (10.1.4).
Uninstalling everything relating to Microsoft Office, including
preferences, Microsoft User Data etc... and then reinstalled does not
help. All options of the value pack are installed as well.
I've also completely removed Quicktime from the system and reinstalled
Quicktime 6.3 but to no avail.
Any ideas?
Thank you.

The other Macs can import PDFs into PPT and Word? That's odd.

But as to the TIFFs, can the other Macs import the exact same TIFF files or
just other TIFFs in general?

Are you importing across a network or from the local HDD. Try locally.

I had a recent issue involving the same error. The difference is, I
received the error while attempting to drag a jpeg image into a Power
Point Presentation. After following the exact same steps you did
(updating office etc.) I tried opening the image in Preview and saving
it as the same name in the same directory. This overwrote the
original file, however after doing that I could add the image to the
presentation without getting that error. I wonder if that would work
for you? If you could open your PDF in preview then save it as a PDF
in the same directory allowing the program to overwrite the original
file. I would of course recommend backing the file up first. That is
what worked for me, hope it helps.

Hi

It sounds like there may be some OS problems on the machines that can not
import the graphics files. PDFs should not be a problem at all. TIFFs can
come in some proprietary formats that may or may not be able to be imported.

As Steve pointed out, a good test is whether or not the *same* documents can
be imported.

If it turns out that the same documents are causing problems, it's time to
do some troubleshooting.

First, run Disk Utility First Aid to repair permissions. If that works, then
great. If not...

Next, grab Norton Utilities, DiskWarrior and TechTools and put 'em to work
and see what they fix.

Or else make a disk image of a good machine and use that. Something's
obviously different in the bad ones.
