I have a new Mac and new 2008 Office. I cannot insert a row in my Excel sheet. When I try, through the usual way, I get a message that says "cannot shift objects off sheet" I am stymied.

The message means exactly what it says :) There is something occupying
space near the bottom edge of the sheet. It may or may not actually be in a
cell but it is there... And it may not even be visible to you.

One of the most common causes is having copied content from elsewhere ‹ such
as a web page. You often wind up with far more than you bargain for, so when
you paste that extra baggage might get flung in anywhere.

Click the Row Heading (number) below your last actual row of data, press
Shift+Command+Down Arrow, then go to the Edit menu & select Delete [or you
can spend some time on a hunting trip at the bottom of the sheet]. You
should then be able to insert rows.

Thanks for your reply - unfortunately that didn't work (tried 4 times). The file I am working on was imported from my old PC and an older version of Excel. Any other suggestions?

Did you use the Delete command from the Edit menu or did you just press the
Delete key on the keyboard? ‹ it definitely makes a difference. Assuming you
did use the menu command...

If this is happening in just the one sheet try selecting & copying the
actual "known" content of the sheet, then paste to a new sheet to see if you
can insert a row there. If you still have the problem try pasting to a sheet
in a new workbook to determine if the problem follows you.

Does the same problem occur in other files or on other sheets in the same
book? If it isn't isolated to the one sheet/workbook you'll need to supply
full version update info for Office as well as OS X. The origin of the file
really shouldn't make any difference.
