Inserting a variable within aletter

I have a form letter with several spaces contained within it that are
underlined. Periodically, I want to add a number or word within those spaces
where I want to preserve the underline. how do i accomplish this? Thanks
for the help.

If you type between underlined spaces, the text should be underlined by
default.
