Inserting CGM Files

T

Tim

I'm a design engineer trying to get some sort of vector based images (DXF or
CGM) into Word 97 (yeah, we're a bit behind the times here). On my machine,
every time I try to insert a CGM file into Word, I get the prompt to choose
the image then for some weird reason, the Insert Picture dialog disappears
(as it should) but then a Basic Options dialog pops up. This only happens on
my machine & for some reason I seem to have the most problems getting these
files into Word. Any suggestions how to 'reset' the CGM import filter?

Also, what is the highest supported version for DXF files in Word 97?

I'm hoping the best answer is to upgrade, as our techies have been shunning
me for a couple of years & it's getting to the point of being anti-productive
in this case.

Thanks for any input!

Hi Tim,

The initial dialog of file type is likely coming
from Tools=>Options=>General [x] Confirm Conversions on open

The Basic Options dialog should appear but you should be
able to turn it off using the Support8.dot template from the Office 97
disk or by the method in this article except where the
registry key shows \9.0\ use the \9.0\ key and set
the value of the setting to zero rather than to 1 .

The highest DXF version supported in Word is R12. The folks
who created AutoCad have not provided the conversion tool
for versions beyond that when the data format of DXF files
changed. You may want to use WMF as an alternative format.

Thank you very much for your speedy input Bob.

The Tools -> Options -> General setting was not checked, so we can rule that
out. I'm not sure that I follow you completely regarding the Support8.dot
template or the registry key suggestion.....could you be a little more
specific please?

For clarification, DXF & CGM are the only routes I have, as WMF is not
available & a basic 'screen dump' type of image is a raggety bitmap, which
will not do for this particular application.

Hi Tim,

The Office 97 support8.dot template has a macro to set the CGM
dialog state from inside of Word.

The MS article I linked to shows the registry entry to set the
same state manually as another method. It's for Office 2000 (v9.0).
Office 97 would be \8.0\.

If WMF export isn't available I'm assuming you're using something
other than Autocad.

Bob,

I'm really sorry, but I fail to see a link to an article in any of your
posts. Am I overlooking something? It may just be that I haven't had my
caffeine yet today. ;o)

You are right, I'm not getting the vector graphics from Autocad. They're
coming from Unigraphics NX2.

Thanks again for your help. It's greatly appreciated.

Hi Tim,

Oops, my error. Here's the article that
may recognize the \88.0\ registry entry
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;320335&FR=1
although using the Support8.dot template from the
Office 97 CD (it may be installed on your computer)
by opening the template in Word may be easier).

Hello again Bob,

Thanks so much for your help. I'll see if the template is installed
somewhere on my hard drive & look into the manual registry change & see if
either of those makes a difference.

I'm thinking that since Autodesk hasn't provided a new DXF format my
problems will not be resolved no matter what route I choose. UGNX2 will only
create DXF files down to R14. I'm probably going to have to find some sort
of DXF to WMF or CGM to WMF conversion utility.

Thank you so much for your help & insight.
