Inserting slide within animation

I have set up a presentation using animation to build on bullets. Is there
a way to go to a subsequent slide and return to the original slide before
all of the bullets have been added?

Yes. You will need a hyperlink using action settings to the subsequent slide
and finally a hyperlink back to the current slide.
As for the animation, you will need to make all the bullets an On Mouse Click.
