Install Office 2000 apps alongside Works 2003

My new computer came with Microsoft Works (Word 2002). I have a full
copy of Office 2000. Can I load other applications from the Office 2000
CD and retain the newer version of Word, or will the old version
introduce files that are incompatible with the new one?
